Problem 2:    What fraction of an ice cube floats in sea water ?

  (given ρice = 0.92 gm/cc , ρw =1.03 gm/cc. )

Solution :

Ice cube is in the equilibrium. Therefore the net force acting on it is zero.
⇒ Fb – mg = 0
⇒ V’dg = Mg ,

where  V’ = volume of the portion of ice cube immersed.

⇒ V’ dg = V Dg where V = volume of the total ice cube.
⇒ V’/V = D/d = 0.92/1.03 = 0.89.
