A current is passed through a steel wire which gets heated to a dull red . Then half the wire is immersed in cold water . The portion out of the water becomes brighter . Why ?

Ans. The resistance of the immersed portion decreases and so the current through the entire wire increases . This is why the portion outside the water becomes brighter .
